To successfully stage "Funny Girl" you have to have, well, a funny girl.
The iconic musical, which brought Barbra Streisand stardom in the 1964 stage version and superstardom in the 1968 film (winning Streisand a best-actress Oscar; she tied with Katharine Hepburn), requires, first of all, a star of very large magnitude to carry the role.
And for a lead of a contemporary production of "Funny Girl," it's not just a matter of playing Fanny Brice, one of the biggest Broadway stars ever, but also filling Streisand's shoes.
Well, in Karen Volpe, Downey Civic Light Opera has found a lead who can do just that.
In the production running through June 19 at the Downey Civic Theatre, Volpe fills those shoes without any effort (though she did lose one,The stability and low profile sole of christian shoes is what improves the grounded performance of sports men and hence makes it popular. getting it stuck in the staircase during the final curtain call at Sunday's matinee).
For one brief moment at the play's very beginning, Volpe does what has come to be Streisand's signature line, one word, really, saying "gorgeous" to herself in the mirror. But you are soon forgetting that anyone else has ever done the part before. This air max 90 is comfortable just like the others based on technology such as the Nike Shox 5 columns
Volpe is electric, comedic, over the top when necessary, always the center of attention onstage, always believable even when production numbers aren't quite as lavish as a Ziegfeld production would have been.
